The Outsiders is a transitioning novel by S. E. Hinton, first distributed in 1967 by Viking Press. Hinton was 15 when she began composing the novel yet did the vast majority of the work when she was 16 and a lesser in secondary school. Hinton was 18 when the book was distributed. The book subtleties the contention between two adversary packs separated by their financial status: the common laborers "greasers" and the high society "Socs". The story is told in the main individual point of view by teenaged hero Ponyboy Curtis.
